Skincare Tips For Melanated Skin!
Hey, Beauties; in light of Black History Month, I want to share skincare tips for all my melanin sisters of all ethnicities African, African-American, Hispanic, White, Indian, Indigenous, and every woman! We all have melanin in our skin; people with albinism have white hair, pale skin, and blue eyes and thus no melanin. So what skin concerns does melanated skin have that are different than other skin colors?
The differences in melanated skin gives a unique set of skincare concerns. Issues that are different in melanated skin are:
- Ashy skin- this occurs because of how dry skin looks as light passes through it over melanin pigment. The light reflection gives a grey-ashy look; however, on lighter skin, it’s less visible.
- Sagging skin- darker skin is more likely to sag than wrinkle. Hence the phrase black, don’t crack! 😅
- Large pores- light absorption and reflection can make pores appear more prominent.
- Skin is perceived as oilier because it can be more visible and reflect light more on darker skin types leading to the perception of oilier skin.
What About Vitamin C and Sun Care?
Most people with brown or dark skin do not wear sunscreen every day. The sun causes the skin cells to make pigment unevenly, leading to the uneven skin color of the face. Sunscreen can prevent harmful UV rays, burning, inflammation, and aging, and Vitamin C serums can help even skin tone, brighten aging, and prevent sagging skin.
The Final Word
If you have tan, brown, or dark skin, no matter what your melanin skin type is, using sunscreen daily is essential! It keeps your skin even-toned and prevents inflammation and aging. Even though your skin doesn’t seem to burn, the sun can still cause damage which leads to an uneven skin tone and premature aging, sagging, and worse! I recommend using an SPF of at least factor 15 every day on any sun-exposed areas, especially the entire face, ear, lips, and neck. Recover with a good Vitamin C serum or moisturizer, and be proud of your melanated skin!
Thank you for reading let’s discuss, do you wear sunscreen? What are your thoughts?
